This prevents flooding a warm engine, so it should start easily. Meaning all.lol, saves the photo storage. TheSamba and to Andy T. who compiled data from several sources. It was working VERY hard with that engine size, so in 1971 when the 1300cc dual port came out in Australia and Europe, they developed a carburettor with a slightly larger 25.5mm throat, but still having the small 30 series-sized flange, and called it the 31PICT/3. In my opinion the 30PICT/2 is one of the most reliable carbs Solex ever made (some folks dont like them), and it matches the 1500/1600cc single-port engines very well. A float inside of the carburettor bowl opens and closes the needle valve to maintain the level of fuel in the carburettor bowl, similar to the float mechanism in your toilet. There seems to be no need for it. Lets see if we can unearth the relevant information. The 28 series carburettor is really too small for the 1600cc engine. I have e-mailed Eric Shoemaker regarding rebuilt carbs. Jay, With the car running, allow the choke heater to respond and open the choke plate. Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2022. Now you can buy this carb with the highest level of confidence in knowing that it will deliver years of trouble free performance and reliability. One is VW 47-1 and above this number it is 9547_0 You may need to adjust this screw once you have the air screw properly positioned. Thanks Jay for all your hard work, making it so much easier for us. I have to see exactly what carb Im running. Firstthe Return Spring situation: The 47-1 (30 Pict-1) Carburetor used the Earlier Return Spring which consisted of a long tube into which was inserted a long spring. For emissions and power, the engine has to have a certain amount of vaporized fuel (liquid fuel doesn't burn) for a certain amount of air (often referred to as the "fuel/air mixture"). I do not trust the Chinese carbs. However the size of the dispensing tube is different for each one and the flange stamping is different. So, It appears to be a 1966 carb. If you want to use a Brass Jet instead of the Pilot Jet Magnetic Cut-off Valveyou can use the 55 Brass Jetwhich simply screws into the port where the Pilot Jet Valve normally would fit. A warped mounting flange can cause a potential vacuum leak. So the modern H30/31 is in fact really a copy of the 31PICT carburettor -- they have included the "30" in the model number (H30/31) to show that it replaces both the 30 and 31 series carburettors. Automatic Choke
Thanks in advance! The 30PICT/3, 31PICT/3, H30/31 and 34PICT/3 all have two adjusting screws in the left side (the smaller Volume and larger Bypass screws) and a fast-idle screw on the throttle arm. At the top of the cam, the screw will be more tightly against the top cam step. We use these screws to "tune" the carburettor. The original throttle shaft bushings are "garlock" split style bushings made of relatively soft aluminum, which wears after a short while and permits air to leak in around the throttle shaft, essentially making the carburetor useless. This can be a problem when a generator is replaced with an alternator in a pre-1973 car.
Adjusted jetting is idle 55, main 127.5 or 130, air correction jet untouched at 125, and power jet 65. Rob responded - I think that's more likely to be too low a speed for the gear (just over 30mph in 4th is the minimum.) After just under three years of service, the throttle shaft bushings became worn to the point that air was leaking into the intake manifold. Turn it in slowly until it bottoms. The 28 series of carburetors also has that feature. There is a wire coming to it from the positive side of the coil. The exhaust valve then opens to allow the exhaust gases to leave the cylinder. Jeff, so you can put a 1967 pic 30 pict on 1966 bug ?but not vise a versa ? I am completely unfamiliar with the 1300 twin-port engines. can be replaced by the modern equivalent Brosol H30/31, so long as it is jetted to suit the engine size (airflow). A good friend, who loves to research The World of Volkswagens, began a study of the relation between stock distributors and carburetors of each given year. Hi Jay. But. Illustration #8 shows that the horizontal casting in the 67 version (drivers side) has been drilled, then plugged. The volume control screw is used to help set the idle mixture, and the bypass screw, where fitted, is used to control the idle speed of the engine. Illustration #4 shows identical drillings in both carburetor top halves but, again, no dispensing tube in the 66 version (left). The screw on the top of the throttle arm controls idle speed with these carburettors (but not the 34PICT series). Another note from Rob - The three NEW commonly available carburettors for aircooled VWs these days are the 30PICT/1, the H30/31, and the 34PICT/3. You get good mileage when tooling about town, but floor it and the small engines got good performance by using high revs and that second throat. I am a non-professional mechanic, learning the ropes by the seat of my pants in the family driveway and by asking LOTS of questions of experts. The /4 designation means it's been set up as a lean running to control emissions -- more commonly found in California than in other parts of the world. Now, back it out 1-1/2 turns. There is no bypass screw on the 30PICT/2 carburettor. Thanks, Jay, for all the details and to Neva for the great pictures. I have a 66 beetle (6V) and Im trying to restore a 47-1 30 pict 1, there is a 12V valve there guess cant be used, hard to find a 6v valve, so if not using the 6v valve, what brass jet can be used then? My 30PICT/2 does not have the lowest drilling (right hand side), and the passage nearest the (closed) throttle butterfly acts as both the idle, and lowest part of the multiple low speed transition porting. Give this a read, while we are doing some research for you. Stay tuned to 1967beetle.com! Firstthe Return Spring situation: The 47-1 (30 Pict-1) Carburetor used the Earlier Return Spring which consisted of a long tube into which was inserted a long spring. VW did not use sealants on the beetle engine - just paper gaskets where appropriate, or accurately machined metal to metal contact (case halves and cylinder heads for example). The choke assembly has been removed and plugged. Now compare the 83-1 with the VW 105-1 which was for the Beetle from 8/66 with a Main Jet of 120, an Air Correction Jet of 125z and with the Power Fuel Supply drilling and a Dispensing Nozzle of 0.50 w/o a check ball. Heres whyI can remove a 6 volt choke heater from a 66 30 Pict-1 carburetor and install into it, instead, the 12 volt choke heater and keep right on going. The 30 PICT-1 carburetor differs . Both were fitted onto 65 T-2s. mtwinger. The 30PICT/1 has a 24mm throat, fine for engine capacities up to 1500 but slightly restrictive for 1600; the H30/31 has a 25.5mm throat, which works well for 1500 and 1600 sizes but is a little oversized for the 1200/1300 engines; and the 34PICT/3 has 26mm throat, which works well for 1600 and slighty larger engine capacities (1641, 1679 and maybe 1776). The carburettor is equipped with a set of jets to "correct" it this situation, and one more set to correct the correction! You, Jay and the other contributors do such amazing work and Im very grateful. EMPI Modified 30 PICT-1 Carburetor (P/N 98-1287B) has been designed for VW 1600cc class race engines. Super nice. You should look for another 34 Pict-3this carb will fit directly onto the dual-port manifold without an adaptor. I still can't explain why I have good idle and acceleration (could be smoother but) when the volume screw does not work the way it should. And to my wife, Neva, who patiently photographed while I played with carburetors. The other problem that I have is that the car is hard to start when the engine is hot -- you have to push the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there a while before the car starts (with a little smoke from the exhaust). Tuning a Solex 30 Pict-1 VW Solex Carburetor 30 PICT 3 For Air-Cooled Volkswagen. Hitting the side of the. The non-PFS 66 version, on the left, is stamped VW 83-1 on the manifold flange. We definitely has benefitted from your article. 2. Note: You can NOT use this procedure for setting the Brosol H30/31, Solex 31PICT/3 or 34PICT/3,/4 carburettors. You could always replace the choke to 6V. Contrast the Main Jet of the VW 105-1 for the 67 Beetle which would be120. Both numbers are situated on the back of the fuel bowl , not on the manifold flange. I do see a 77 and a 78. [1] 2. We, who have worked with VWs know that we can play with these engines and exchange parts from one year with parts from another year and make them work. A Euro 67 with a 1500. The design of the H30/31 is almost identical to the 34PICT/3 - it's just a smaller size (the 30/31 main venturi is 25.5mm, the 34 has a 26mm venturi). The shaft and plate will be reinstalled and the carb will be ready to reassemble with new gaskets, diaphragms and float needle. [* WordPress Simple Firewall plugin marked this comment as trash. The 66 was the first year to have the black steering wheel, knobs, etc. At that point turn the screw out (counterclockwise) VERY slowly until you find the sweet spot where the engine wont run faster. Turn the Bypass Screw (the larger one) out a couple of turns, to get things started. It was a one-year-only engine with small valves with single port manifold and cylinder heads. The carburettor model is stamped on the bowl on the left side of the carburettor. Here's a picture of Dave's worn out bushings -. I need a 6 volt source with which to check them for viability. It remains consistent that for the 1967 Beetle destined for consumption for the USA market, only the VW 105-1 was the carburetor of choice. Im going to try and get a birth certificate from Germany. I apologize for the confusion. Of course, Bus and Ghia variants were different than on Bugs. My apologies for not showing the VW 105-1.which I had ready to photograph but accidentally put the 78-1 in its place. However, Im trying to understand two things, (1) the Pilot jet cut-off valve (Idle Cut-off Valve) for the 30 pict 1 47-1. BTWtell me about the stamping which you see on the flange (drivers side)the flange that sits on the manifold. I dont want too fast or too slow.
The air correction jet size is very important when using a smaller carburetor on a larger engine. Thanks again for the article. Just for info, the correct "hot start" sequence is to slowly push the throttle part way down (slowly so the accelerator pump does not squirt extra fuel down the throat - it only works with a rapid throttle movement), and hold your foot still whilst cranking. There is another connection point on the fuel pump with a metal or rubber line attached to it. I encourage you to look for that stamping first. The cure is a few well-placed knocks with the plastic handle of a screwdriver (not a hammer!) Thanks again for your knowledge. Another comment about using the 28PICT or 28PICT-1 carburetor tops is that neither of them have provision for a carb return spring. I will continue to check to see if I can unearth this carburetor. Details regarding these settings are given in the links below. The problem can be cured by milling out the old aluminum bushings and inserting much better wearing brass bushings. Honestly, pretty excited about it! Thanks for coming back to me, youre right, Im in the UK so a non US vehicle. Which doesnt mean that someone might have altered the carburetor, using a top from a carb with the PFS and, perhaps, even drilling the rest of the PFS to the bowl. The Power Fuel System Dispensing Nozzle for the VW 105-1 would be 0.50 with no check ball. From elsewhere on our Web page - You cannot use the larger 34PICT/3 carburettor on a single-port engine - the flange on the 34PICT/3 is too large for the single-port manifold. Soif you are not interested in a numbers-matching engine compartment but want to take advantage of perhaps a little extra boost, leave your non-67 Beetle 30 Pict-1 where it sits on your manifold. The Pilot Jet Valve (idle jet) would be the g55. With no check ball on the 30 series, no check ball was needed. My question is can I still get a new choke unit for this carb. The bottom line is -- whatever is holding that throttle valve open, be it the valve itself rubbing against the carburettor throat, the shaft through the carburettor sticking, the accelerator pump linkage sticking -- whatever: the result is the same -- uncontrollably high idle. Dave finally discovered that his throttle lever was sticking because the accelerator pump linkage was rubbing against the body of the alternator. 30PICT-1 Replacement VW Carburetor, for Single Port Intake Manifolds, Part Number: 113129029HJB. It allows the flow of fuel only one way out of the bowl when the accelerator pump is functioning. The 1300 also was the first Beetle year to have cam bearings. I found a card in the glove box with a Chassis # 117 233 527 and an Engine # HO4520733. 2. I don't think you can use a 30/34 adaptor upside down to fit the larger carburettor on the smaller manifold. Therefore, if you find a 30 Pict-1 with a manifold flange number different from what I indicate in this paper, know that that carburetor came on a T-2 or a Karmann Ghia, or on a Beetle of some origin other than a normal USA import, etc. Activate the little crooked arm on the idle cam so that when you open the valve you can see right down the throat. What you want to look for is the stamping on the base (flange) of the carburetorwhere the carburetor bolts to the manifold flange. However, the purist in me kept my mouth shut. Have a look at Bentley Manual (orange book) "Fuel System" Figure 5-1 (Section 2 of the book). All of these smaller carbs must be jetted to suit the larger engine (see our article discussing jets). My Chart tells me this: Good info, Andy! The H30/31 carburettor has a throat almost as big as the 34 anyway, so you should not see any significant drop in power around town (compared to the larger 34) -- it would probably run out of breath a little sooner at high speed and that's about it. There are two numbers on my carburetor. And because we of 1967Beetle.com are concerned with Beetles, and, specifically 1967 Beetles, my comparisons will be limited to the 66 and 67 Beetle versions of the 30 Pict-1 carburetors. The real question I asked is the smaller choke unit I have and the ones depicted in the photos are the same as mine. Be sure the wire is connected and that it runs to the (+) terminal on the coil. 30/31 PICT-3 Type 1 & 2 Bug Bus Ghia. 1967beetle.com is such an amazing resource. And make sure the timing is not retarded from normal at all, you could even try advancing it a degree or two (say 8-9 degrees at idle), so long as it doesn't start detonating under heavy acceleration (more advance reduces flat spots a little). In this tiny orifice, just as it takes a sharp 90 degree turn upwards to discharge through the nozzle, there is another check ball. jay. Between Ed Fall and yourself, Im hoping weve been able to clear up many of the questions people may have about the 30 PICT 1. Thus, the PFS Nozzle could/would be of a different size. Status: Offline. Illustration #1 pictures both German Solex 30 Pict-1 versions. These have two throats, a smaller one for idling and gentle cruising about town, and a larger throat which only opens when you step on the gas. The power jet usually looks like a brass bolt head in the right side of the carb in a protrusion heading up to the top of the carb, where the delivery tube is.
